Basque Club Wins Copa del Rey in Dramatic Penalty Shootout
Athletic Defeated Mallorca 1-0 on Penalties in Sevilla
Athletic Club has won the Copa del Rey after defeating Mallorca 1-0 on penalties in Seville on Saturday.
The match was settled by a penalty shootout after a goalless draw in regulation and extra time.
Athletic, who last won the Copa del Rey in 1984, had the edge in the shootout, converting all five of their spot-kicks.
Iker Muniain, Raul Garcia, Oihan Sancet, Nico Williams, and Oscar De Marcos all scored for the Basque club.
Mallorca, who were playing in their first Copa del Rey final since 2003, had the chance to win the match in the 11th minute of extra time.
However, Vedat Muriqi's penalty was saved by Unai Simon.
Athletic Bilbao's victory is their first major trophy since winning the Supercopa de Espana in 2015.
The win also means that Athletic Bilbao will play in the UEFA Europa League next season.
