Guinea Pig Rescues on the Rise
Local shelters and rescue organizations are seeing an increase in the number of guinea pigs being surrendered.
Experts say the trend is likely due to a combination of factors, including the rising cost of pet care and the growing popularity of exotic pets.
The Philippine Animal Welfare Society Inc. (PAWS) is one of several organizations that have seen a surge in the number of guinea pigs being surrendered in recent months. PAWS spokesperson Anna Cabrera said the shelter is currently caring for over 100 guinea pigs, up from just a few dozen a year ago.
Cabrera said she believes the increase in surrenders is due to a number of factors, including the rising cost of pet care and the growing popularity of exotic pets.
"Guinea pigs are relatively inexpensive to purchase, but they can be expensive to care for," Cabrera said. "They require a specialized diet, regular veterinary care, and a large enclosure. Many people are simply not prepared for the financial commitment involved in owning a guinea pig."
Cabrera also said she believes the growing popularity of exotic pets is contributing to the increase in surrenders. "Guinea pigs are becoming more and more popular as pets, but many people are not aware of the challenges involved in caring for them," she said. "As a result, many guinea pigs are being surrendered to shelters when their owners can no longer care for them."
If you are considering adopting a guinea pig, Cabrera encourages you to do your research and make sure you are prepared to provide the animal with the care it needs.
