Deadly Earthquake Strikes Japan, Triggering Tsunami Warnings

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck western Japan on Monday, causing widespread damage and leaving at least four people dead. The quake triggered tsunami warnings, which have since been downgraded to a tsunami advisory.

The earthquake struck at 11:08 a.m. local time (10:08 p.m. EDT Sunday) in the mountainous region of Yamanashi, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) west of Tokyo. The epicenter was near the city of Fujikawaguchiko, which is popular with tourists visiting Mount Fuji.

The quake registered an intensity of 3 on the Japanese seismic scale of zero to 7. The shaking was strong enough to cause buildings to collapse and landslides. There were also reports of damage to roads and bridges.

The tsunami warning was issued for the entire Pacific coast of Japan, from Hokkaido in the north to Okinawa in the south. However, the waves generated by the earthquake were relatively small, and no major damage was reported.

The death toll from the earthquake is expected to rise as rescue workers continue to search for survivors. The Japanese government has deployed thousands of troops to the affected area to assist with rescue efforts.

The earthquake is a reminder of the constant threat of natural disasters in Japan. The country is located in a seismically active region and has a long history of earthquakes. In 2011, a massive earthquake and tsunami devastated northeastern Japan, killing more than 15,000 people.
